The internal Auditor will be responsible for independently evaluating the effectiveness of internal controls, risk management Process, and governance practices within the NGO. The internal auditor is responsible to conduct audits, reviews and assessments to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, government policies and organizational policies. He/she will provide recommendations for process improvements and corrective actions to enhance operational efficiencyand mitigate risks.
Responsibilities:
1. Audit planning and Execution:
- Develop risk based audit plans and programs to assess the adequacy and effectiveness of internal controls and good governance process.
- Conduct comprehensive audits of financial, operational, and compliance areas within the NGO.
- Perform testing and analysis of transactions, processes, and systems to identify control weakness, deficiencies or irregularities.
2. Compliance and Regulatory Oversight:
- Monitor compliance with applicable laws, regulations, donor requirements and organizational policies.
- Review contracts, agreements and grant terms to ensure adherence to contractual obligations and reporting requirements.
- Stay abreast of regulatory changes and emerging issues affecting the NGO sector and provide guidance to management on compliance matters.
3. Risk Assessment and Management
- Identify and assess key risks facing the NGO, including financial, operational, reputational and strategic risks.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of risk management processes and recommend enhancements to mitigate risks and strengthen internal controls.
- Assist in the development and implementation of risk management strategies and mitigation plans.
4. Fraud detection and Investigation
- Conduct investigations into allegations of fraud, waste or abuse, following established protocols and procedures.
- Collect and analyze evidence, interview witness and prepare investigation reports documenting findings and recommendations.
5. Reporting and communication
- Prepare clear and concise audit report summarizing findings, conclusions and recommendations for management and the Executive board.
- Follow up on the audit findings and recommendations to ensure timely implementation of corrective actions.
6. Capacity Building and Knowledge enhancement
- Provide training and awareness session to staffs on internal control, best practices, compliance requirements, and fraud prevention techniques.
- Support capacity-building initiatives to enhance the skills and knowledge of staff in areas related to audit, risk management, and governance.
Qualification and Skills:
- Minimum Bachelor’s Degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or related field: professional certification audit.
- Proven experience in internal auditing, risk management, or compliance, preferably in the nonprofit sector or with NGOs.
- Strong knowledge of auditing standards, Principles, and techniques, including risk assessment methodologies and control frameworks.
- Excellent analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex data, identify trends and draw meaningful conclusions.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact professionally with stakeholders at all levels.
- Detail-oriented with high degree of accuracy and integrity in performing audit work and maintaining confidentiality.
- Proficiency in relevant software application, familiarity with accounting system etc.
