Job Description

The Head Librarian is responsible for overseeing all aspects of library operations at The British College. This leadership role includes strategic planning, management of physical and digital resources, supervision of library staff, enhancement of user experience, and alignment of library services with academic goals. The Head Librarian will also lead initiatives to promote learning, research, and engagement across the institution.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership

  • Develop and implement long-term strategies for library growth and innovation. Coordinate with senior management to ensure library goals align with institutional objectives.

Library Services

  • Ensure effective and timely delivery of library services to students, staff, and faculty. Monitor user satisfaction and continuously improve service quality.

Resource Management

  • Oversee the acquisition, cataloguing, classification (e.g., DDC), and inventory of all physical and digital materials. Coordinate with programme leaders for academic resource requirements.

Team Supervision

  • Lead, train, and supervise library staff. Assign duties, conduct performance reviews, and support professional development.

Digital Access

  • Manage online databases, e-resources, and library software (e.g., Orbund). Promote digital literacy and access to e-books, journals, and research databases.

Policy and Compliance

  • Develop, implement, and update library policies including borrowing rules, overdue penalties, and digital usage protocols. Ensure compliance with institutional and accreditation standards.

Student & Faculty Engagement

  • Facilitate student inductions, orientation sessions, and training workshops. Collect user feedback regularly and respond to evolving academic needs.

Record & Data Management

  • Maintain accurate and confidential records of all library transactions, memberships, and resource usage through library management systems.

Budgeting & Vendor Relations

  • Prepare the annual library budget, monitor expenditures, and liaise with publishers, vendors, and subscription services.

Event Planning

  • Organise library events, book exhibitions, reading challenges, and other literacy-promoting activities.
