Summary

Do you want to support gender-positive and gender-transformative change in the Hindu Kush Himalaya? In this position, you will have the opportunity to support ICIMOD’s gender and social inclusion work across the region and within the institution.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone who values working in partnership towards improving mountain environments and livelihoods as ICIMOD moves into its new Strategy 2030 period, from 2023, with gender and social inclusion at the heart of its work.

Main duties and responsibilities 

The Gender Research Associate will work under the direct guidance and supervision of the Senior Gender and Social Inclusion Specialist. The Associate will support the Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) Specialists in their work under the programmes of the institution.

Specific duties and responsibilities

  • Work closely with the GESI team to assist GESI-focused knowledge and engagement activities
  • Work with the GESI team to integrate GESI into the design of new activities and into planned activities and programmes 
  • Undertake field visits as per the requirements of the programmes and activities planned
  • Support the GESI team in the collection and analysis of gender and inclusion-related data in the HKH region
  • Support the GESI team with reporting on GESI-focused research and activities 
  • Draft/write papers on gender issues based on datasets reviewed and analysed
  • Work with the Knowledge Management and Communication Unit to ensure GESI success is promoted widely internally and externally
  • Network with partners for advancing GESI goals in the HKH context

Qualifications and experience

  • A master's degree in gender or women’s studies, social sciences, international development, human rights, sociology, anthropology, or any related field with at least one year of relevant work experience working on gender issues, preferably in the HKH. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
  • Knowledge on gender and/or social research methodologies, including data collection and analysis
  • Ability to undertake field travel to remote areas in the HKH
  • Excellent interpersonal skills 
  • Good writing, oral presentation, and communication skills

Duty station

  • The duty station is Kathmandu, Nepal. Frequent travel within the HKH region may be required.

Duration

  • The position is for one year, with a probation period of three months and with a possibility of yearly extension, subject to performance and ICIMOD’s future funding levels. 

Remuneration

  • Salaries and benefits at ICIMOD are competitive compared with other international organisations. We offer a comprehensive benefits package, which includes provident fund, health insurance, severance pay, education grant, and paid leave. 
  • Remuneration is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
