Himalayan Nature (HN) is a development and conservation research institute, an IUCN member, a partner of The IUCN SSC Asian Species Action Partnership (ASAP), and only a member of Alliance for Zero Extinction (AZE) from Nepal, dedicated to biodiversity and high-value species conservation, habitat management, as well as initiating scientific research on Himalayan biodiversity and the broader environment. HN promotes traditional knowledge and custodianship of indigenous communities, safeguarding the livelihood and well-being of the marginalized and natural resources-dependent communities across the protected areas to foster co-existence. It is now seeking applications for the position of Market System Associate (MSA) from highly motivated and result-oriented Nepalese candidates with proven experience and skills in Market System, value chain, sound knowledge of project implementation, community engagement, and entrepreneurship will be given priority.

Himalayan Nature is implementing CONNECT project in the buffer zone of Shuklapahanta National Park in Kanchanpur District, Sudurpaschim Paschim Province. CONNECT project is a consortium project of four organizations-Renewable World, Zoological Society of London (ZSL), National Trust for Nature Conservation and Himalayan Nature. It is funded by Jersey Overseas Aid. The project aims to strengthen linkage between conservation and livelihoods in and around the Shuklaphanta National Park and its buffer zone through its works in five municipalities in Kanchanpur. CONNECT project adopts market systems approach in its implementation of livelihoods activities surrounding agriculture, renewable energy technologies and tourism.

Job Description

Position title: Field Officer
Number of positions available: One (1)
Duty Station: Field based in Kanchanpur (Shuklaphanta National Park)
Duration of Contract: 12 months with possible extension based on performance
Salary: Attractive as per the institutional provision

Qualifications: Master’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Forestry, Natural Resource Management (NRM) or related discipline with a minimum of one year of relevant professional experience for a Master’s and three years for a Bachelor’s in project implementation, natural resources management, and community-based conservation projects, and community engagement. S/he should have a strong knowledge of conducting field assessments, data collection, and monitoring and evaluation activities. Candidates should have proven experience in working with different institutions at all levels; knowledge of information management technologies, partnership development, and communication technologies is an added advantage.

Role Of Summary:

The Field Officer will support the Senior Field Officer (SFO) in implementing and managing project activities, objectives, strategy, and resources and the actions necessary for the realization of a CONNECT project and its coordination with consortium partners, governmental authorities, and key stakeholders for the tangible benefit of the organization and projects. S/he will assist the SFO to develop and conceptualize project strategy, developing high-quality content, and producing knowledgeable products that support the project’s advocacy and practice objectives; and share this knowledge with target audiences.

 Summary of Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist in managing and supervising project implementation and evaluation across all components in the project landscape, applying administrative and financial procedures as required, to achieve anticipated results in accordance with compliance with the defined logical and financial framework
  • Persistently coordinate with the consortium partners to track the physical progress of the project
  • Facilitate communication, coordination, and collaboration with local government, authorities, and any other project stakeholders to explore space for match funding
  • Review and collate existing information on HWC data and existing best practices and select relevant stakeholders and vulnerable community groups
  • Work with the Buffer Zone Users Committee (BZUC), and local communities, in order to identify conflict hotspots; mobilize, engage, and support communities for HWC mitigation activities in collaboration with the consortium partners
  • Design and develop IEC materials on biodiversity conservation and HWC mitigation, and strengthen education and awareness programs in schools and communities at the project sites
  • Facilitate an array of training for the local communities to enhance livestock management including aquaculture, goat rearing, and market system strengthening
  • Interact/hold meetings with the team members and representatives from consortium partners aiming at improving the quality and deliverables of the project
  • Contribute to HN's external influence by participating in networks, coordination meetings, and other representative events useful in CONNECT's project and strategy
  • Build rapport with the local resources person to board their support and expertise in the livelihood component and market system development
  • Support program partners, experts, line managers and senior staff in collecting relevant data and information to measure project outcomes and impact.
  • Tracks achievements and indicators of the project as per the logical framework. Assist Senior Field Officer (SFO) in preparing quarterly and annual progress reporting and quality assurance of reports, narrative summaries, journals, stories of change and other notes.
  • Develop and present reports, and effectively communicate programmatic progress, successes, challenges, issues, and lessons learned to HN, project partners, stakeholders, local communities and media through using various communication tools in close coordination with the line manager and senior staff of HN.
