Situation Analysis in Nepal

Terre des hommes (Tdh) is the leading Swiss organisation for children’s aid. Through the health, migration, Access to Justice, WASH, protection and emergency relief programmes, Tdh provides assistance to over four million children and their families in around 40 countries each year.

Tdh is an impartial and independent non-governmental organisation that supports vulnerable children and their families, regardless of their ethnic background, religion or political affiliation.

In Asia, Tdh is implementing projects in India, Nepal, Myanmar and Bangladesh, either directly or through local partners. The priorities for Tdh in the Asia region are to reinforce health systems, improve mother and child health, improve health and sanitations conditions, support gender equality and protect children and their families, in contexts affected by internal displacements and migration and by the lack in access to justice, with a focus on the most vulnerable persons. Tdh’s work in Asia has focussed on decreasing vulneraries of children to violence and exploitation and strengthening child protection systems and services. The approach adopted is transversal in nature; whereby participation, empowerment and resilience components are strengthened of children, their families and communities including mainstreaming of mental health and psychosocial support services. Capacity building of service providers and partners, engaging with formal and non-formal child protection systems and strengthening them, prioritising alternative care and empowering adolescents through sports and participation are some of the flagship projects.

Tdh also provides emergency assistance to families affected by natural disasters or displacements .More specifically, in Nepal, children are facing a high risk of child labour, perinatal health issues, trafficking in person, violence and along with malnutrition and the impacts of natural disasters. Therefore, Tdh priorities in Nepal is to improve child health and to protect and prevent child exploitation and ensure wellbeing of children and the communities.

Tdh in Nepal has been also providing emergency assistance to families affected by natural disasters (like flood, earthquake, cold-wave, etc.

The Tdh’s Asia region organizational structure is under development, in order to adapt to the operational needs and to the beneficiaries needs: from July 2020, India and Nepal delegations merged under the umbrella of a Multi Country Delegation (MCD) set up.

Tdh is active in Nepal since 1985 and currently working in 19 districts; including Baridya and Kathmandu valley.
