Project Description

Deloitte Consulting is the implementing partner for the USAID-funded Urja Nepal Project (“Project”) based in Kathmandu. This position is under Deloitte Consulting Overseas Projects LLC. The purpose of Urja Nepal is to create a financially viable electricity sector that provides affordable, reliable and secure power and enables the entry of private investment into the Nepali market.  This is anticipated to be a five-year program; however, this short-term consultancy is currently for one year with possibility of renewal based on funding and project need.  This part-time position is based in Kathmandu.
The Environmental Specialist will require in-depth expertise in Nepal’s electricity sector and have experience implementing environmental frameworks and standards (e.g., IFC Performance Standards on Environmental and Social Sustainability, IHA Sustainability Standards, etc.) and have experience conducting Environmental and Social Impact Assessments for power projects. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Provide thought leadership, positioning Urja Nepal as one of the leading environmental and sustainability organizations in the power sector.
  • Identify potential partners to support environmental and sustainability initiatives.
  • Support stakeholders to improve environmental compliance by providing training, coaching, and targeted E&S support.
  • Undertake technical assignments for projects including training, researching and drafting high quality technical plans and reports, conducting assessments, providing recommendations and other deliverables as requested.
  • Perform reviews of relevant E&S laws, policies, regulations, processes, and practices to identify gaps or areas to improve coordination amongst counterpart institutions and educate stakeholders.
  • Assist in the E&S risk assessment for the Integrated Resource and Resilience Plan.  
  • Other duties as required to support environmental and sustainability efforts.

Qualifications:

  • Seven to ten years of experience in the implementation of environmental compliance and sustainability projects in the power sector. 
  • Knowledge of the principles of environmental protection and environmental sustainability.
  • Experience in conducting and completing EIA surveys.
  • Experience coordinating and leading the development and/or implementation of environmental mitigation and monitoring plans in the power sector.
  • Able to work independently, exercise sound judgment, think on your feet and work comfortably in a public-facing position.
  • Strong Project Management skills.
  • Strong writing, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Master’s Degree in Environmental Science or relevant discipline.
  • Fluent in written and spoken Nepali. 
  • Fluent in written and spoken English.
