The dermatology nurse works closely with the patient, their family, and the dermatology team to ensure clear client education, a smooth recovery, and minimal complications. The dermatology nurse deals with a wide range of procedures, from cosmetics to other complications. These nurses also spend time educating their patients about serious acne medications, skin cancer prevention, etc.
Patient Assessment:
- Conduct thorough skin assessments, documenting existing conditions, lesions, and abnormalities.
- Obtain patient histories related to skin health and relevant medical information.
Dermatological Procedures:
- Assist dermatologists in various dermatological procedures, including biopsies, excisions, and cosmetic treatments.
- Prepare patients for procedures and provide post-procedure care instructions.
Skin cancer screening:
- Conduct skin cancer screenings, identifying potential abnormalities and referring patients for further evaluation if necessary.
- Educate patients on the importance of regular skin checks.
Patient Education:
- Educate patients on proper skincare practices, sun protection, and the management of skin conditions.
- Provide information on prescribed medications and treatment plans.
Wound Care:
- Provide wound care for post-operative patients and those with skin injuries.
- Monitor and assess wound healing, and address any complications.
Cosmetic Dermatology:
- Assist in cosmetic dermatology procedures, such as laser treatments, chemical peels, and injectables.
- Collaborate with patients to address aesthetic concerns.
Topical Medication Administration:
- Administer topical medications as prescribed by dermatologists.
- Instruct patients on proper application techniques and potential side effects.
Phototherapy:
- Administer and monitor phototherapy treatments for conditions such as psoriasis and vitiligo.
- Ensure patient compliance with treatment plans.
Documentation:
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date electronic health records (EHR) for all dermatology patient encounters.
- Document assessments, procedures, and treatment plans.
- Before and after photos and videos with a proper recording system.
Collaboration with Dermatologists:
- Collaborate with dermatologists to discuss patient cases, treatment plans, and ongoing care.
- Participate in multidisciplinary care teams as needed.
Duties and responsibilities:
- Consulting with patients and setting appointments.
- Interviewing and medically screening patients before providing services.
- Performing skin examinations/ assessments.
- Preparing treatment rooms.
- Sterilizing medical instruments and tools.
- Educating patients on treatments and procedures, including what to expect before and after.
- Assisting dermatologists and surgeons with cosmetic procedures and surgeries.
- Performing pre-operative and post-operative care.
- Monitoring patients during the procedure.
- Staying up-to-date with new procedures and protocols.
Daily Roles/ Duties
- Screen client or patient and evaluate immediate treatment.
- Record patient information and medical history.
- Perform basic health-related tasks, including, but not limited to, drawing blood, taking vitals, administering fluids, and inserting IVs.
- Operate standard medical equipment.
- Process and analyze lab results.
- Communicate with physicians, nurses, medical assistants, and other healthcare staff.
- Educate patients on nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle recommendations based on medical history and current condition.
- Advocate for patient’s needs to physicians and doctors.
- Stay current with advances in healthcare options, medications, and treatment plans.
- Assist doctors and other healthcare staff as needed, including helping with minor procedures.
- Other duties as assigned by senior staff or management.
