Location:  Habitat Nepal East Field Office- Biratnagar 

Reports to: Communications Specialist

Field Visits: Frequent travel to project areas (25-35%)

Core Function: The Communications Officer will serve as a member of the Resource Development and Communications team to contribute to communications initiatives targeted at relevant stakeholders for both international and national audiences. He/she works in close collaborations with the Resource Development team and project teams to develop and deliver photography, video graphic contents, content writing, storytelling (narratively and graphically), and media relations to complement Habitat for Humanity Nepal's communication strategy and project deliverables.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Tell the powerful brand story of Habitat in Nepal through producing compelling stories, engaging photography and videos, and contributing up-to-date information on web/social media, communication collaterals, merchandise, and other creative outputs. 
  • Maintain systematic filing, retrieval, and archiving of photographs, videos, stories, consent forms, and other collateral generated by Habitat Nepal.
  • Support in designing and layout communication materials such as newsletters, publications, signage, family stories, brochures, press releases, thank you notes, and all other related materials for Habitat Nepal. This includes coordinating with program colleagues and communication specialists to develop graphic content for funding-raising efforts, donor reports, and IEC materials.  
  • Care and maintenance of Habitat’s communications equipment and assets, assuming primary custodian of such assets.
  • Support in preparing communications reports and presentations.
  • Provide help in drafting and editing internal and external communication articles (e.g., publications, press releases, social media posts, website posts.)

Management of Digital and Non-digital Assets:

  • Manage Habitat Nepal’s online activities and branded digital assets (website and social media channels). This includes curating content/materials, working with others in Habitat Nepal.
  • Monitor staff and partner activities for consistent messaging and branding, complying with and maintaining integrity in all printed and digital collaterals published with the Habitat for Humanity Branding Guidelines.
  • Coach Habitat colleagues and Implementing Partners on branding related to events and initiatives, program awareness, volunteer engagement, special builds, disaster response projects, international days, etc.
  • Conduct training for colleagues and partner organizations, where possible, on how to take good photos that meet Habitat for Humanity guidelines.

Media Relations:

  • Monitor and report on media mentions
  • Support relations with media houses and journalists to position Habitat positively for press articles.

Others:

  • Keep up to date with industry-leading software and technologies, print materials, and electronic trends.
  • Engage, contract, and maintain effective communications with vendors and consultants when required.
  • Provide support to special events with activities that may or may not be related to communications.
  • Any other activities as assigned by the supervisor.

Level of Effort/Timeline:

The Communications Officer position will be based in Biratnagar Office and required to travel to project areas up to 25 - 35% with flexibility in movement as per the work requirements.

Supervision:

The Communications Officer will work under the direct technical supervision of the Communications Specialist and in close coordination with the Donor Engagement Manager and technical, cross-cutting, field and operations teams. He/she will also support consultants and vendors and potentially field-based staff.

Knowledge and Skills:

Required 

  • Competence in using photograph, video, sound & lighting equipment, and video editing software (Adobe Premier and Aftereffect).
  • Experience and competence in piloting drones.
  • Excellent abilities to tell stories graphically that touch the hearts of audiences. 
  • Interprets local realities for an international audience and packages messages that are engaging and compelling.
  • Competence in producing graphical messaging using design software (Adobe Suite).
  • Ability to work in cross-cultural settings with cross-functional teams.
  • Strong research skills with clear reasoning and organizational abilities.
  • Travel within Nepal will be required. 
  • Applicants should have the right to work in Nepal, where this position is based.

Highly desirable:

  • Experience managing websites, social media channels, content curation, and data analysis.
  • Expert in photography, video production and editing and content writing.
  • Experience with brand management and implementing strategies and campaigns for brand building.
  • Excellent training and mentoring skills. 
  • Competence in translating English to Nepali and vice versa.

Education Qualification, Professional Experience: 

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Mass Communications/ Journalism or in a relevant or equivalent field is required. 
  • Further studies building on communications skills is highly desirable.
  • At least 5-year professional experience working effectively in multi-disciplinary, multi-cultural teams in the Communications sector. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to establish, maintain and manage relationships with diverse groups of stakeholders.
  • Professionally proficient and fluent in written and spoken English and Nepali.
