KVS is a non-profitable school running under the Kopila Valley Sewa Samaj, an NGO registered in Surkhet, Nepal, and funded by BlinkNow Foundation USA to provide world-class education to the neediest children who deserve the best education.  Our mission is to change the world by empowering Nepal’s children. The K-12 school is co-located with other programs including a residential children’s home, women’s empowerment center, sustainability, health and wellness, and family development program. We provide our students a free education, educational materials, health treatment and medicine, counseling, and a place to live. With our innovative future program, we strive to provide our children with career guidance, and scholarships for further studies. 

The BlinkNow Foundation is a 501(c)(3) based in New Jersey which, through its country office in Nepal, oversees these programs in rural Nepal. Every day we strive to create a sustainable organization working to educate all of Kopila’s children until they are ready to enter the world as happy, skilled, confident, self-sufficient adults. We believe we can serve as a model for quality education in Nepal. We will strive to provide our children with scholarships (should they choose to pursue higher education), and the skills required to enter the world as global citizens, and ambassadors for change.

Job Title: Big Sisters’ Home Assistant

Report to: Associate Manager-Health and Wellness, Principal-KVS

With our innovative future program, we strive to provide our children with career guidance, and scholarships for further studies.  Health and wellness program is one of the important programs of KVSS which provides promotive, preventive and basic curative healthcare services to children, their guardians and staff. Big Sister’s Home having directly under KVS is providing transitional home services to the most at risk girls so that they could continue their studies and gradually reintegrated to their respective family.

Position Summary: Big Sister Home (BSH) Assistant, KVS is responsible for the care, well- being, and upbringing of the girls living at BSH. The incumbent is responsible to provide basic parental, pastoral, and holistic care to support the girls with the brightest future possible. Other responsibilities include managing and coordinating with staff members working in the BSH and ensuring that all related operations are running as smoothly as possible. The BSH Assistant should have patience and passion for working with children. This is a full-time residential position and a long-term role in shaping the sustainable future of Kopila Valley, Surkhet. With the overall guidance of the Principal and Associate Manager-health and wellness, the BSH Assistant requires to have frequent communications with school, other programs of KVSS.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure that the children at BSH are cared for and supported best.
  • Manage home operations activities and supervise the support team members. 
  • Support the girl’s admission in the BSH, and reintegration into the family/community.

Detailed responsibilities:

1. Ensure that the children at BSH are cared for and supported best

  • Create and update routines for children's activities and ensure that they are followed properly.
  • Manage activities that are designed to promote physical, mental, and social development of the children. 
  • Being a primary caregiver you are responsible for the development, health, and safety of all the girls residing in the BSH. 
  • Make sure that you give extra focus to girls based on vulnerability. Also, ensure they are ready for school, and monitor their hygiene.
  • Support children in their education so that they study for an appropriate amount, and manage interactive activities, and support children to learn, grow, and feel proud.
  • Make sure the children take all the scheduled life skills development training through coordination with the line manager.
  • Make sure that the health needs of the children are addressed promptly, using all available resources, such as first aid, the school clinic, and other local and national health services as required.
  • Performing regular check-ins with the girls in a one-to-one format to provide support and engage them. 
  • Oversee kitchen management by ensuring that the food schedule/time is properly managed, seasonal menu change is prepared and communicated to the team members, and cleanliness, hygiene, and safety are maintained in and around the bedrooms, study room, and the kitchen.  
  • Work closely with the line manager, nutrition officer, and counselor to manage positive interaction activities for the growth and development of the girls.

2. Manage home operations activities and supervise support team members.

  • Supervise the work of support staff at the BSH daily and provide continued feedback for any improvements required to improve services.
  • Coordinate with the admin team to ensure all the required goods and supplies are procured on time. 
  • Monitoring the home supplies and making sure they are always adequate and up to date.
  • Demonstrate discipline from personal behavior, initiate it for the team to demonstrate, and encourage the team to follow. 
  • Making sure the home is running smoothly.
  • Manage individual files of girls with the help of the Health and Wellness Associate Manager.

3. Support the girls in the process of girls’ admission in the BSH, and reintegration into the family/community

  • Ensure that all the required documents are filed at the time of admission and also help other team members to prepare the documents. 
  • Support children to prepare for transition and reintegration in the family/community by organizing designed workshops for them. 
  • Be involved in the reintegration team and support the team with the necessary documentation, home visits, and follow-ups.
  • Facilitate the process of reintegration in the communities.
  • Do regular home visits whenever required.
  • Make sure that you are in regular communication with guardians and families.

Additional expectations

  • Build positive working relationships and environment in the organization by bringing solutions to the discussion table.
  • Demonstrate professionalism in all interactions and execution of duties including ensuring confidentiality as per the organization’s protocols.
  • Report to the manager weekly, and as needed in case of urgent activities.
  • Build and maintain a strong relationship with the leadership team of KVSS and BlinkNow Foundation to ensure the continued success of our joint projects.
  • Demonstrate strong work ethics, compassion, and professionalism and exhibit a high level of integrity towards the organization.
  • Arrange and attend regular staff meetings both within and outside the program team.
  • Communicating regularly, this includes responding to messages and emails promptly.

The above list of responsibilities is not comprehensive, and the BSH Assistant may be required to take on additional responsibilities, as determined by her line manager.

Must have:

  • Educational: At least +2 degree
  • Experience: At least two years work experience in related field
  • Skills and abilities: Ability to manage and care for teenage girls, work collaboratively and independently with at least supervision required. Preference will be given to the candidate who has caregiving and counselling experience.
  • Language: A good communicator, and fluent in English and Nepali
