Organisation structure : The Finance Assistant reports to the Senior Finance Officer.

Job Responsibilities and Accountability

BBC Media Action is recruiting an experienced Finance Assistant to provide support to BBC Media Action programmes in Nepal, through dealing with day-to-day financial issues pertaining to general programme areas. Finance Assistant will support in the management and oversight of basic financial functions of BBC Media Action Nepal in compliance with BBC Media Action controls, donorcompliance, legal and statutory compliance for BBC Media Action's work in Nepal.

The position is based in Kathmandu with possibility of traveling to field locations as necessary.

BBC Media Action Nepal is seeking potential applicants for the position of “Finance Assistant”. “The role may involve working with groups of vulnerable children and adults. For the successful candidate, mandatory training will be provided on BBC Media Action’s safeguarding policy and staff code of conduct. BBC Media Action operates a zero-tolerance policy concerning all forms of abuse and exploitation of vulnerable people.”

Main Duties

  • Maintain and organize financial transaction documents. Ensure that all supporting documents are properly filed and easily retrievable for audit purposes.
  • Post entries to the accounting software timely ensuring correct Project and Donor codes as per the budget availability and BBC Chart of Accounts. 
  • Handle the petty cash and make timely payment of all the petty expenses. Prepare petty cash settlement report for reissue and reimbursement of petty cash advance. 
  • Assist Senior Finance Officer to handle the cash and bank payment process in time. 
  • Assist the Senior Finance Officer in the preparation of monthly financial reports and month-end documents. 
  • Provide timely and accurate procedural support on advance payments and settlements to the production team. 
  • Ensure that the supporting documents are appropriate, and expenses are in compliance with BBC procurement/finance policies and donor policies. 
  • Travel to field as per requirement to support and coordinate on field payments and have proper invoices/receipts and supporting documents are obtained. 
  • Perform regular bank reconciliations to ensure accuracy and completeness of financial records. 
  • Carry out other duties that will be assigned by the line manager. 

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Degree in accounting, business studies, management.
  • At least 2 years of relevant experience in finance related functions.
  • Knowledge in working on Excel spreadsheet.
  • Strong communication skills including the ability to write well in English and Nepali.
  • Highest standards of integrity, discretion, and loyalty.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to respond positively to critical feedback and differing points of view.
  • Ability to work in demanding situations and sometimes under pressure and in an organised systematic manner.
