Position Overview:

The Epidemiologist and Biostatistician will provide technical expertise in epidemiology, biostatistics, research methodology, quantitative data analysis, and interpretation of research findings across TLMN research studies and projects. The post holder will contribute to the full research cycle, including study design, development of research protocols, sampling and sample size calculation, statistical analysis plans, data management, statistical analysis, interpretation of findings, report and manuscript writing, and dissemination of research findings. The position will work closely with researchers, clinicians, research scientists, field teams, program staff, and external research partners to ensure that research studies are scientifically rigorous, methodologically appropriate, and conducted in accordance with approved protocols and ethical standards.

Key Taks and Responsibilities:

Provide technical expertise in epidemiological study design and implementation, including cross-sectional, cohort, case-control, intervention, and other appropriate study designs.
Contribute to the development of research proposals including research questions, objectives, hypotheses, conceptual frameworks, and statistical analysis plans.
Conduct sample size and statistical power calculations and advise research teams on appropriate sampling strategies.
Lead and/or independently conduct statistical analysis of quantitative research data.
Conduct descriptive and inferential statistical analyses using appropriate statistical methods.
Apply appropriate regression and multivariable statistical techniques to research datasets.
Identify and appropriately address potential sources of bias, confounding, effect modification, missing data, and data quality issues.
Develop, review, and implement data management and statistical analysis plans.
Support development and management of electronic data collection systems using platforms such as Kobo Toolbox, REDCap, or equivalent systems.
Conduct data cleaning, coding, validation, quality checks, and preparation of datasets for analysis.
Maintain appropriate documentation of data cleaning, statistical syntax, analytical decisions, and analysis procedures.
Interpret statistical findings and communicate results clearly to researchers, program teams, and other stakeholders.
Contribute to preparation of research reports, technical reports, scientific manuscripts, abstracts, presentations, and other dissemination products.
Provide statistical and epidemiological input into research proposals, grant applications, and research protocols.
Provide technical support during field implementation of research studies and ensure adherence to approved sampling and research procedures.
Support training and mentoring of research staff and data collectors on epidemiological methods, sampling, data quality, and data management.
Review statistical analyses and provide technical guidance and quality assurance to other members of the research team.
Maintain confidentiality of participant information and research data.
Ensure compliance with ethical guidelines, approved research protocols, and research governance requirements.
Assist in preparing documents and submissions for ethical approval to the Nepal Health Research Council and other relevant authorities.
Work closely with the research team and supervisors to report research progress, analytical findings, challenges, and recommendations.
Participate in research meetings, technical reviews, dissemination activities, and coordination meetings with research partners.
Assist in strengthening the capacity of TLMN-Research staff in epidemiology, biostatistics, data management, and quantitative research methods.
Undertake other similar research activities and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.

Education:

Master’s Degree in Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Public Health or other related fields from a recognized university.
PhD in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Public Health, or a related field will be preferred.

Experience:

Minimum 3 years of relevant professional or research experience in:

Epidemiology, biostatistics, public health research, or a closely related field.
Epidemiological study design, sampling, and sample size calculation.
Quantitative data management, cleaning, validation, and statistical analysis.
Development and/or implementation of statistical analysis plans.
Regression and multivariable statistical analysis.
Preparation of research reports, manuscripts, abstracts, research proposals, or grant applications.

Required Skill and Competencies:

Strong understanding of epidemiological principles, study designs, and research methodology.
Strong knowledge of biostatistical methods and quantitative research.
Proficiency in at least one statistical software package: R, Stata, or SPSS is essential.
Ability to independently conduct data management and statistical analysis using R, Stata, or SPSS.
Ability to conduct sample size and power calculations.
Knowledge and practical experience in regression and multivariable analysis.
Ability to identify and address bias, confounding, and effect modification.
Ability to interpret and communicate statistical findings appropriately.
Strong data management and data quality assurance skills.
Familiarity with electronic data collection and management platforms such as Kobo Toolbox and REDCap.
Strong research report writing and scientific writing skills.
Ability to review research methodology and statistical analyses critically.
Ability to explain statistical concepts and findings to researchers and non-statistical audiences.
Strong analytical, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills.
Good communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary research team.
Attention to detail and commitment to research quality and integrity.
Willingness to travel frequently to research and field sites.
Ability to work in diverse, remote, and resource-limited settings.
Ability to manage multiple research assignments and meet deadlines.
Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, including clinicians, laboratory scientists, researchers, program staff, and external partners.
Commitment to maintaining confidentiality of research participants and research data.
Ability to use digital data collection and research data management platforms such as Kobo Toolbox and REDCap.

Preferred

Experience in Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) research or programs.
Familiarity with lymphatic filariasis, leprosy, or other infectious diseases.
Experience in community-based public health research.
Experience in mixed-methods research.
Experience with longitudinal, cohort, case-control, or intervention studies.
Experience with advanced statistical modelling.
Experience working with national and/or international research collaborators.
Experience in research proposal development and publication in peer-reviewed journals.
