Kopila Valley Sewa Samaj is a non-profitable NGO registered in Surkhet, Nepal to provide support for children and families in our community. Our programs include a residential children’s home, women’s empowerment center, sustainability, school, health and wellness, and family development. We provide our students a free education, educational materials, health treatment and medicine, counseling, and a place to live. With our innovative future program, we strive to provide our children with career guidance, and scholarships for further studies. We do this with our funding partner BlinkNow Foundation and in close ties with the local government and communities. 

The BlinkNow Foundation is a 501(c)(3) based in New Jersey which, through its country office in Nepal, oversees these programs in rural Nepal. Every day we strive to create a sustainable organization working to educate all of Kopila’s children until they are ready to enter the world as happy, skilled, confident, self-sufficient adults. We believe we can serve as a model for quality education in Nepal. We will strive to provide our children with scholarships (should they choose to pursue higher education), the skills required to enter the world as global citizens, and ambassadors for change.

Kopila Valley Sewa Samaj (KVSS) supported by BlinkNow Foundation is looking for a qualified & enthusiastic person to provide psycho-social counseling support to women suffering from gender-based violence. He/She will support the children and their family members with physical, emotional and mental health issues to improve their sense of well‐being. This role requires a qualified person with a strong sense of passion to empower women and girls and has a learning attitude. This is a full-time position with growth opportunities for strong candidates who will play a long term role at KVSS.

Must Haves

Education and Experience: 

  • Post-Graduate Diploma in Counseling Psychology or Masters in Counseling with 3 years of counseling experience, or Bachelor's Degree in relevant discipline with 6 months Counseling Training and 5 years counseling experience. 

Language: Fluent in English and Nepali

Skills and Abilities:

  • Good on using Microsoft Office tools and email.
  • Ability to manage cases, counseling, passionate with and cares for the women, families and vulnerable population.
  • Initiator, and can work collaboratively and independently with the least supervision required.
  • Eager to learn, trustworthy, ability to maintain confidentiality.

Additional Requirement: 

  • Working experience in rural/urban poor areas with deprived population and/or dysfunctional families would be an added advantage
  • Applicants working in the field of Mental Health in the healthcare sector/hospital are highly encouraged to apply.
  • Two wheeler driving skill with a valid driving license is preferred.  
  • Experience of work in the community with children and family would be an added advantage
  • Experience in Family Development/support/strengthening Program.
  • Require critical thinking, time-management skills; interpersonal and communication skills; good physical condition; flexible scheduling.

Job Description

Core Responsibilities

  • Ensure the mental health and psychosocial well-being of women, children and family associated with Kopila Valley Women's Center.
  • Support Trainees to overcome their gender-based violence related problems and economic empowerment through vocational training, psychosocial counseling and behavioral changes.
  • Create and manage case files including referrals made to other services and agencies. 
  • Manage crises as and when they arise utilizing support of the program team at Kopila, government agencies and other partner organizations when necessary.

Detailed Responsibilities

Ensure the mental health and psychosocial well-being of women, children and family associated with Kopila Valley Women's Center.

  • Plan for major empowerment topics in consultation with the program head and support in its implementation.
  • Provide counseling to trainees, graduates, & families in individual and group settings.
  • Develop and implement case management action plans for complex situations and for trainees who have mental health issues, victims of domestic violence, or who are vulnerable.
  • Provide individual or group guidance and psychosocial counseling sessions at the women's center  and their living places as needed.
  • Perform home visits whenever required, and run counseling sessions with different family members for improving relations with each other.
  • Operate counseling centers by providing drop-in and scheduled counseling sessions to our trainees on a daily basis. 

Support Trainees to overcome their gender-based violence related problems and economic empowerment through vocational training, psychosocial counseling and behavioral changes.

  • Work with trainers and program heads to make sure trainees are getting any individualized support when necessary.
  • Liaise with family members to improve their relation, and provide counseling services to families where necessary
  •  Share updates with the supervisor on all activities and cases as required.
  •  Provide ad hoc counseling sessions for community members experiencing severe circumstances.
  • Lead planning & execution of Community Awareness programs regarding important health and safety topics.
  • Stay updated with current happenings in legal and administrative procedures of the social sector.
  • Support women center events, including arranging speakers and trainers, arranging participants, managing attendance and record keeping.
  • Support in the admission and graduation process of the trainee/s
  • Together with other program team members, facilitate and support community outreach programs. 

Create and manage case files including referrals made to other services and agencies.  

  • Create and manage case files of each woman, girl or person who went through counseling session/s that includes background, demographic data, needs, progress, and a clear action plan using standard formats. Keep cases confidential at all times unless safety issues arise.
  • Document accurate and honest case stories of each trainee/s for marketing materials that tracks their progress through our program without violating participant’s personal rights.
  • Provide support for legal cases, conflict mediation and wellness checks.
  • Make a referral to another organization if the trainee feels any type of violence.
  • Manage referrals with accurate and required details considering future needs of each trainee  and their families in a given format; create action plans for interventions, track and report progress. 
  • Attempt to maximize training function provide counseling, making referrals to other services, and case management interventions. 
  • Utilizing key relationships with government agencies and other partner organizations when necessary. 
  • Be warm, kind, and supportive of all participants building a trusting relationship and providing a safe environment.

Manage crises as and when they arise utilizing support of the program team at Kopila, government agencies and other partner organizations when necessary.

  • Workout for new training topics and support in implementation of the training in coordination and collaboration with wards and municipalities.
  • Coordination with stakeholders including external trainers, NGOs & Government agencies. 
  • Be discreet and private when handling all cases
  • Contribute to develop, reform relevant policies as required.
  •  Provide individual and group counseling for Children’s home and Big Sister’s Home as per need.
  • Support women’s center staff in evaluating the successes and weaknesses to ensure the program evolves to fit current social and political environments and is the most relevant and useful to incoming trainees.
  • Be proactive in terms of communicating issues and problems, escalating urgent issues with supervisor, management, and remain calm in all circumstances 
  • Develop network and strengthen relationships with other organizations providing similar services in Surkhet and Nepal, which support, encourage, and enhance counselling facilities in the organization. 

Other Responsibilities 

  •  Stay updated with current happenings in legal and administrative procedures of the social sector and update the team for any changes.
  • Provide detailed monthly reports, including a list of all counseling and coordination activities, an overview of critical cases, and challenges encountered in day-to-day work.
  • Participate in various internal and external meeting, monitoring sessions, case conferencing  and training refreshers.
  • Build and maintain physical and electronic case files for each person undergone counseling, updating regularly and where necessary. 

The above list of responsibilities is not comprehensive, and the Women & Family Counselor may be required to take on additional responsibilities, as determined by his/her Supervisor.
