A. Context

We do this through our focus on health, governance and rights, resilience, and humanitarian response, partnering with civil society, local media and governments to produce creative programmes in multi-media formats which inform and engage audiences and strengthen the media sector through building professional capacity and infrastructure. 

BBC Media Action global team is seeking potential applicants for the position of “Global Financial Accountant”. 

B. Job purpose

This role plays key role to ensure the provision of a high-quality financial accounting service that supports the effective and efficient management BBC Media Action financial resources.

The person in this role will report to the Head of Control & Assurance (UK) as a full-time member of the Control & Assurance Team. They will work alongside the Global Finance Systems Manager & Financial Assurance Manager as well as collaboratively with the wider BBC Media Action Global Finance Team.

The successful applicant will be employed and based in Nepal, with salary set according to BBC Media Action’s Nepal pay scales. BBC Media Action will not sponsor visas or provide relocation packages for this role.

C. Key responsibilities and accountabilities

  • Support the Head of Control and Assurance (HoCA) in ensuring the integrity, accuracy, and timeliness of core financial processes.
  • Responsible for managing the full cycle of monthly staff charging process in collaboration with other departments. Ensure monthly journals are prepared and posted onto the financial system timely & accurately. Coordinate with staff to ensure that the Excel based time recording systems are completed accurately and in line with the staff recharge timeline. Work closely with key stakeholders to continually improve the staff recharge process.
  • Manage monthly payroll postings. Ensure that payroll reconciliation is completed monthly and necessary actions are performed in a timely manner to ascertain payroll expenditure completeness.
  • Lead projects income allocation process to ensure effective collaboration between the country offices and the central team in allocating income to projects timely & accurately. Produce unallocated cash report (SAP) and support the income allocation process. Lead on reconciliation with sales invoices, ensuring any unallocated cash queries are resolved in timely manner.
  •  Responsible for assisting in month end activities such as reviewing and analysing allocated central cost centres, SAP to Dimension data integration issue resolution (SAP error resolution) and deferred income balances reconciliation.
  • Carry out monthly assurance reviews of country office Monthly Checklists and feedback to key stakeholders on the outcome of the reviews. Work with other members of the Control & Assurance team to develop a central dashboard to report on the monthly assurance review.
  • Play a key role in preparation of the annual statutory accounts and supporting schedules, answering auditor queries where relevant, under overall supervision of the Financial Assurance Manager.
  • Working with other members of the Finance team, continuously assess the service being provided to the users of financial information and explore improvements to ensure that core finance processes are being undertaken as efficiently as possible.
  • Maintain full and effective communication with members of the Finance team and others to ensure the smooth and efficient flow of information.
  • Provide finance support and analysis for other parts of the organisation as requested by the Head of Control and Assurance.
  • Support adherence to BBC Media Action policies and procedures.

D. Essential skills/experience:

  • Full or part Qualified Accountant (ACA / CIMA / ACCA/other equivalent) with well-developed technical financial skills.
  • Experience working for a large, international charity and/or international media organisation.
  • Experience of financial and management accounting, including complex reconciliations and financial accounting processes.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and experience of administering and developing financial accounting systems such as Access Dimensions and/or SAP.
  • Proven ability to build effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders at all levels and to work collaboratively to achieve objectives.
  • Proven ability to manipulate data with accuracy & focus, and exceptional attention to detail.
  • Proven experience in making suggestions for continuous improvements of core financial processes.

Desirable skills/experience:

  • Proven track record of strengthening financial controls in a comparable international organisation.
  • Ability to communicate effectively at all levels within the organisation.
  • Fluency in one or more languages (besides English) spoken in BBC Media Action country offices.
