Sankalpa- Women’s Alliance for Peace, Justice and Democracy was founded in June 2011 by women’s rights organizations that have worked together in an alliance – Women’s Alliance for Peace, Power, Democracy and Constituent Assembly (WAPPDCA) since 2006. Since its formation, Sankalpa as an alliance has demonstrated its effectiveness by undertaking strategic interventions and activities to capture the momentum of inclusiveness in the post conflict Nepal and within the changing political environment to advance women’s equal power and equal rights. Sankalpa understands that as a network, its strength comes from the work and learning of each of its member organizations and the influence that these organizations have in national policies. The alliance has worked with the mission captured by the slogan 'mission 50-50', proportionate and representative participation of women at all levels of the peace process and state structures. Sankalpa has adopted four distinct approaches to materialize its vision, ’Peaceful, just, equitable and democratic Nepal where women play a decisive and powerful role in governance and politics’, they are: capacity building, movement building, institution building and organization building.

Job Description

The Director will have responsibility for:

  • Leading the organisation.
  • Ensuring that all programmes, communication, financial and fundraising activities support the mission of Sankalpa: To help increase and enhance women representation and rights in the government, political parties, private sectors, at all levels, and ensure that conflict affected women have access to social justice.
  • Mobilisation of resources for Sankalpa’s programmes and activities.
  • High level representation of Sankapla with key audiences such as Government, Donors, entrepreneurs and local and international Partner organisations.
  • Representation of the staff and member organisations on the Board and on the Executive Committee.

DETAILS OF THE ROLE:

Strategic Planning:

  • Provide leadership in the formulation and implementation of Sankalpa’s policies and strategies in the core areas of programme and operations, finance, resource mobilisation, human resources management and advocacy.
  • Lead strategic programme development and planning including the preparation of long term strategic plans.
  • Work together with the member organisations in formulating and implementing mission related policy/strategy/guidelines and fund raising strategies.

Resource Mobilisation

  • Develop resource mobilisation and fundraising policies, strategy and plans in conjunction with representatives of member organisations
  • Oversee the planning for proposals development regarding proposal writing assistance, budget and time period.
  • Formulate strategies for managing events that are aimed at enhancing external image and improving networks.
  • Facilitate, and take lead role in the development of programme/ project concept notes, EOIs and proposals and submit to donors ensuring proposals fulfil the donor requirements and respond to donor queries.
  • Involve member (and partner as necessary) organizations in the process to incorporate their elements within the project strategy and proposals negotiation with the donors. Ensure all reports are accurate, well written and programmatically sound.
  • Facilitate donors' visits along with the programme team

Coordination, Liaison, Networking and Advocacy

  • Coordination and liaison with government, partners, other I/NGOs for the purposes of advocacy, information sharing, learning new approaches and sharing Sankalpa’s lessons learnt, results and good practices; both nationally and internationally.
  • Represent Sankalpa at local, national and international forums.
  • Take the lead in enhancing the capacity of counterparts and community groups supported by Sankalpa and where applicable local government staff to help increase and enhance women representation and rights in the government, political parties, private sectors, at all levels, and ensure that conflict affected women have access to social justice.

Programme Management

  • Planning and Implementation
  • Direct the planning, development and implementation of policies, strategies, plans and procedures of Sankalpa programmes and operations in order to enhance operational effectiveness
  • Cooperate, coordinate, supervise and liaise with the Project Managers with regard to the implementation of the partner projects and related activities
  • Oversee programme activities to ensure a high standard of professional excellence maintained among staff members and that all programmes are in compliance with all policies and procedures

Monitoring, Evaluation and Research

  • Oversee the development of monitoring, evaluation and research framework methodologies and indicators for programmes as agreed with donors
  • Oversee and participate in monitoring visits to programme/ project areas and develop the ideas for improvement of programme performance from perspective of donor reporting and new programme designi
  • Monitor all programme/contract performance, deliverables and financial goals and objectives

Human Resources Management

  • Manage human resources according to authorised HR policies and procedures that fully conform to the current laws and regulations
  • Carry out performance appraisal of senior management team and develop capacity building plans for all staff Facilitate and organize appropriate training and development opportunities and couch the staff

Finance

  • Manage organisation’s resources within budget guidelines and oversee financial reporting, grant management and treasury functions according to current laws and regulations
  • Coordinate the preparation and expenditure of budgets ensuring Sankalpa maintains a healthy financial management
  • In direct co-operation with the Project Managers and other account holders (counter-signing), approve all expenditures, procurements and local staff contracts for the project.
