Supervisor/Principal Evaluator: Project Coordinator
Location: Kathmandu (60 % in field)
Period: March to December 2023
Grade: C10

Purpose of the Position 

Community Self-Reliance Centre (CSRC) is facilitating land and agrarian rights campaign since its establishment in 1993. Also engaged on disaster governance through policy advocacy, guideline formulation and implementation of numerous DRR projects after 2015. 

CSRC is implementing the ECHO funded "Together for Disaster Preparedness and Early Action in Landslide Affected Hill Area of Nepal" project to strengthen community resilience to landslides and to support early warning and response systems in consortium with People in Need (PIN), Save the Children (SCI) and Scott Wilson Nepal.

The Engineering Geologist will be responsible for the geohazard assessment of landslide affected community/settlements and guided to the team for effective assessment and reporting as per geohazard investigation guideline and sharing the report with local government, Bagmati province government, NDRRMA and other respective line agencies too. S/he is primarily working together in close coordination with project coordinator.

Major Responsibilities: 

  • Lead the technical task (landslide prone area assessment, safe place and route identification, land use plan formulation process) and taking the responsibilities to conduct the assessment. 
  • Undertake desk study of locations to be assessed to gather the necessary background prior to undertaking the field work.
  • Develop a landslide and flood hazard risk and Risk Sensitive Land Use Map for the residential areas as per the priority of the local governments.
  • Prepare site survey and assessment reports with recommendations on the significance of the hazards, the elements of the community that are at risks and or propose further studies or investigations required and risk reduction /intervention measures and classify and categories the settlements as per geological assessment that are considered feasible and cost effective. 
  • Review the present land use/multi hazard risk map which was shared by the survey department to local government and Support in undertaking risk sensitive land use plan for the selected municipalities.
  • Facilitate the technical orientation session on the topic of geohazard assessment findings sharing's and land use maps.
  • Assist to the team for the reconstruction and resettlement process and provide the technical assistance for the relocation community.  
  • Collaborate and coordinate with other working agencies in National, Provincial, district and local level regarding the geohazard assessment. 
  • Before finalize the assessment report, sharing the finding to the experts, local government as well as NDRRMA technical team for the feedback.
  • Share the final findings to local government, respective community as well as respective government agencies. 
  • Building the relation with national, provincial and local government and participate in technical program. 
  • Assist to the consortium team as well as local government to develop the detail project report of CAT II area for the disaster risk reduction, installation the signal in field etc. 

Reporting and Monitoring  

  • Prepare the geohazard assessment report with technical recommendation and submit to the line manager on time. The report should be developed as per site basis. The summary report should generate in both English and Nepali languages.
  • Prepare the presentation of geohazard assessment and sharing the major findings with three tires of government for the fund leveraging to mitigation activities for CAT II settlements, reconstruction and relocation of CAT III HHs.  
  • Sharing the field observation and final geohazard assessment report to the project team, local government, NDRRMA and Bagmati Province. 
  • Finalize the geohazard assessment report as per recommendation and feedback of concern stakeholders.
  • Generate quality monthly reports and submit to the line manager on time.

Maintain cross cutting issues 

  • Ensure the cross-cutting issues GESI, Good Governance, RBA, Anti-corruption, conflict transformation and others in a project implementation and personal life.
  • Carry out other tasks as assigned by an organization and line manager as relevant with subjective matters.
  • As a member of CSRC, contribute to overall organizational goals, objectives, and compliance standards.

Preferred Qualification and Experiences 

  • Master's Degree in Geology, Applied Geology, Engineering Geology, Geophysics, or related field and discipline. Geological Engineering will be preferred. 
  • S/he shall have at least (2) two years general working experience with at least (1) one-year specific experience in the area of hazard and disaster studies and geological assessment related work with working experience in the reconstruction projects will be preferred. He/She should have good knowledge of ArcGIS, ILWIS and QGIS. 
  • Good Knowledge on landslide investigation government guidelines, land use map which is shared by survey department to the local government. 
  • Sound knowledge on reporting, presentation and documentation process
