PROGRAM/DEPARTMENT SUMMARY:

Beginning the second week of August 2017, Nepal experienced a period of sustained, heavy rainfall resulting in widespread flooding across 35 of the country’s 75 districts. Several districts recorded the heaviest rainfall in 60 years, and over 80% of land in the southern Terai region was inundated by floodwater. Mercy Corps Nepal extended it response support in couple of districts during initial phase of flood response. Mercy Corps has a plan to extend its response and preparedness activities in Kailali district with focus on water sanitation and hygiene promotion (WASH) intervention. Mercy Corps’ core approach to response and recovery programming is to meet immediate needs and help communities rebuild their lives in a manner that reduces their vulnerability to future shocks and stresses.

GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY:

The Sub Engineer will be responsible to support district implementation partner in Kailali to design and implement WASH intervention as a part of flood response. S/he will work closely with partner Project Coordinator and other staffs to provide technical assistance and capacity building support for successful implementation of the project components.

The Sub Engineer will support in the planning, designing, implementation and supervision of WASH intervention and ensure quality implementation within stipulated time and cost. S/he will be responsible for successful implementation of WASH interventions in selected schools and communities. This position works in close collaboration with DRR project manager to achieve program objectives and targets. S/he will also

support to extend close coordination and collaboration with related stakeholder at district level. As gender and social inclusion (GESI), governance and M&E are cross-cutting and core components of all MC Program, the Sub-Engineer is required to own these components and ensure GESI sensitivity and integration, governance practices and M&E systems are integrated into his/her work area.

REPORTS DIRECTLY TO: DRR Project Manager

WORKS DIRECTLY WITH: DRR Project Manager, Partner Project team, other support team members.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Civil Engineering.
  • At least 1-3 years of relevant experience in WASH-related projects.
  • Experience in partnership management.
  • Previous experience in WASH-related Project Design, Implementation, Supervision, and Monitoring.
  • Previous experience working with Local NGO(s), government and non-government organizations
  • preferred.
  • Strong computer literacy with a full knowledge of Microsoft office applications.
  • Strong organizational skills and demonstrated ability to multi-task and process information into action as
  • to not delay program activities.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail, ability to follow procedures, meet deadlines and work independently
  • and cooperatively with team members.
  • Strong English skills required, both written and spoken.
  • Ability to work effectively with an ethnically diverse team in a sensitive environment
  • Willingness to travel to program areas as needed.
  • Competence riding a motorbike preferred.

The successful Sub-Engineer will support the design and implementation of WASH initiatives as a part of flood
response in Kailali district. S/ he will support the partners by providing technical expertise and capacity building as required.The most successful Mercy Corps team members have a strong commitment to teamwork and accountability, thrive in evolving and changing environments and make effective written and verbal communication a priority in all situations.
