Established in 1998, BBC Media Action is the BBC’s international development charity. BBC Media Action uses media and communications to help reduce poverty and support people in claiming their rights, our aim is to inform, connect and empower people around the world. SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

Required:

  • Strong experience in qualitative and quantitative market/social research.
  • Experience using qualitative and quantitative research methodologies.
  • Strong IT skills, including Excel and PowerPoint, and experience with data analysis software packages such as SPSS or Atlas. 
  • Strong written and spoken English and Nepali.
  • Strong report writing and presentation skills, communicating complex technical ideas using non-technical language to a wide range of audiences from journalists, production staff and development practitioners. 
  • Ability to plan and conduct work with minimal supervision.
  • Track record of delivering research findings to deadline.

Desirable, but not required:

  • Familiarity with commissioning and/or conducting research in developing countries. 
  • Familiarity with media communications research approaches and methodologies (advertising and/or brands and/or marketing). 
  • Experience of and/or interest in research on international and development issues.
  • Experience of working with media professionals in production-oriented teams.

Job Description

Overall purpose of Job

We are looking for talented and experienced Research Officer to work on the governance project.

Duties:

  •  Analysis and Reporting- Possess a good understanding of management’s reporting requirements in terms of providing analysis and recommendation for quick understanding and decision making. This includes designing ways of reporting figures in an effective and strategic way. Also to work with other research team members to compile data and undertake other activities as required.
  • Proposing Research- With Research Manager liaise with internal clients to determine audience research needs. Be involved in formulating research design, and using interactive data to inform business development/new opportunities.
  • Designing Research Methodology - Working with other research team members to design and draft research instruments, particularly those used for quantitative work and monitoring and evaluation. Input and help draft research design – sampling, recruitment and logistics.
  • Liaison with Agencies conducting fieldwork –Supporting the pretesting/piloting of research instruments, as needed. Monitoring and controlling the quality of fieldwork/data collection, project timeliness and budgets for the research projects being handled.
  • Conducting fieldwork – Moderating focus groups and conducting depth interviews when necessary. Continually looking at ways to improve data collection both feeding into research design, moderation and analysis of data.
  • Presenting Findings - With the Research Manager and other Research Officers to help to disseminate the analysis of key findings and the strategic recommendations.
  • Personal Development - Review the latest trends and developments in research methodologies related to behavior change, impact assessment and communications research, and evaluating the same for adoption in the Media Action’s Research and Learning work.
  • Training - Participate in Research and Learning workshops, and representing the Trust in other knowledge sharing workshops related to our project activities and project partners. Train and share knowledge with the research assistant where appropriate.
