Samari Utthan Sewa (SUS)

Project Coordinator

Samari Utthan Sewa (SUS) is a non-government, not-for-profit social development organization. It was established in 2008 by a group of committed youths from the Dalit communities. SUS has been working with Dalit, poor, landless, vulnerable and other socially excluded segment of the society focusing on their basic needs and improving livelihoods, while also contributing in the process of empowering then to raise their voices for the cause of human rights, particularly for Dalit and women human rights.

Community Empowerment through Social and Economic Upliftment Project (CESE-UP) is a four years long project implemented by SUS. The project has been implemented since 2018 with the financial support from Felm. The project has been implemented in Sarlahi, Morang and Chitwan district of Nepal. The project covered a total of 2500 Households (HHs) organised into 130 Self Help Groups (SHGs).

Poverty is the main problem that project areas and beneficiaries are experiencing, and the resulting problems include food insecurity and widespread malnutrition, illiteracy and lack of access to employment opportunities and environmental pollution arising, inaccessibility to basic facilities such as water and sanitation. Most Dalits, who comprise landless and excluded are deprived of their basic human rights {e.g., citizenship, land-rights). Similarly, most children of school-going age are deprived even of primary education, and there are cases of high early drop-outs. Caste- and gender-based discriminations against some segment of the society (women and socially excluded people) still prevail thus depriving them of public service delivery (e.g., income generating, health, education, and access to social security benefits such as allowances for senior-citizens, people living with disabilities, etc. "The poor and excluded people are social, economically and legally empowered" is the impact of this CESE-UP.
