Financial Capability and Training Specialist

The Sakchyam Access to Finance Programme (Sakchyam) is an initiative funded by UKaid as part of a bilateral agreement between the Governments of Nepal and the UK. It is implemented by WSP USA Solutions Inc. (WSP) for UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) in partnership with international and local institutions.

The Programme works with the public and private sectors to leverage access and facilitate financial sector development in Nepal for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) as well as low income households. The Programme has three main components: Component I to support Banks and Financial Institutions to improve SME Financing; Component II to strengthen the capacity of Microfinance Financial Institutions (MFIs) and cooperatives to improve service delivery; and Component III to increase the financial capability of households and enterprises.

Duty Location: Kathmandu (With frequent field visits)    

Expected Start Date: September, 2018 

The Financial Capability and Training Specialist will be an integral member of the Financial Capability Component and will be tasked with improving the capacity of the Sakchyam partner financial institutions to provide effective and sustainable capacity building and financial literacy training to their beneficiaries, households and enterprises in the Sakchyam priority districts. The position will report to the Financial Capability Component Lead and will work in close coordination with the SME Finance, Financial Inclusion and other components of the Programme. The position will require an innovative approach to strengthening the capacity of the Financial Service Providers (FSPs) in designing and delivering new and innovative financial literacy materials, delivery channels and methodologies.

Key Responsibilities:

Following are the main duties to be performed by this position:

  • Provide support in building/ enhancing capacity of partner institutions in better designing and delivering trainings to develop financial capability that is tailored to the beneficiaries and uses technology for maximum impact
  • Deliver financial literacy trainings on setting of household financial goals, savings and its importance, obtaining credit, its cost and debt management, mitigating household risks, identifying and selecting FSP, preparing family budgeting, and financial negotiation
  • Design and deliver Training of Trainers (ToT) programmes for select employees of partner institutions
  • Work with Sakchyam partners to better protect and empower their clients by establishing/enhancing client grievance and feedback mechanisms 
  • Support programmatic interventions for improved financial literacy  
  • Closely coordinate with the Financial Inclusion Component to integrate findings and recommendation for financial capacity building of these FIs
  • Work closely with the GESI Advisor to ensure financial capability programmes includes rural poor, DAGs, youth and women 

Reporting: 

  • Candidate will report to the Financial Capability Component Lead

Minimum Qualifications and Experiences:

  • Bachelor Degree in Business Management/Financial Management or related discipline; Master degree will be an added advantage
  • More than 4 years of direct work experience in designing and delivering financial literacy training programmes to financial institutions (MFIs, MFDBs, Cooperative and Commercial Banks) with demonstrated experience in using technology and innovative delivery channels and methodologies.
  • Excellent communication skills in English and Nepali, both in writing and speaking. 
  • Ability to work in tight deadlines
  • Nepalese national, able to live and travel throughout Nepal
