USAID’s Strengthening Systems for Better Health (SSBH) Activity is a 6-year project aimed at improving health outcomes in Nepal, particularly for the most marginalized and disadvantaged groups in the country. SSBH supports the Government of Nepal’s efforts to expand access to and use of quality maternal, newborn and child health and family planning services, with a specific focus on newborn care and is designed to achieve three major outcomes:

(i) improving access to and utilization of equitable healthcare services,
(ii) improving the quality of 
health services at facility and community levels and
(iii) improving health systems governance, within the context 
of federalism.

The project is implemented in close collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Population at federal level and with provincial and municipal governments, health facilities and other key health sector stakeholders at sub-national levels.

Location: Kathmandu, Nepal

Supervisor: Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) Director 

Under the supervision of the MEL Director and working closely with the senior technical team, the Documentation Officer will have primary responsibility for ensuring the timeliness, quality and completeness of project written deliverables.  In addition to assisting with development and finalization of routine deliverables, s/he will help the project team identify and develop Success Stories, Technical Briefs, Event Briefs, documentation of exemplary practices, and other communication materials. S/he will also be supported in this work by the Activity’s home office-based technical team. 

Position Responsibilities 

  • Under the leadership of the MEL Director work with the Senior Management Team to develop and execute a strategic communication plan for the project to increase its visibility with project counterparts at all levels of government, other EDPs and implementing partners, Nepal’s public health community, the public in general, and USAID.
  • Support production of routine project deliverables such as progress reports and workplans; this task will include establishing reporting schedules, drafting reporting templates, compiling and editing inputs from project team members and producing polished, final drafts for review by senior team members.
  • Review and edit all project research, technical and communications products, ensuring that they are properly edited and tailored to the appropriate audiences.
  • Advise on dissemination methods for different written products to help ensure that information reaches and resonates with the appropriate audiences; assist with design of compelling presentations, using PowerPoint or other presentation software.
  • Draft reports or briefs on project events such as workshops, conferences and training.
  • Work with technical specialists and field-based staff to document project activities and develop story pitches, success stories, case studies other communication pieces.
  • Help build the capacity of project staff to draft high quality written deliverables, focusing on content, writing skills and presentation.

Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s Degree (Master’s preferred) in public policy, communications, public health or other relevant field 
  • Minimum of six years of relevant experience
  • Excellent writing and editing skills in English
  • Demonstrated ability to produce high quality, professional-level written products under deadlines
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the public health system in Nepal, along with a solid understanding of the federal system of government
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with an ability to work productively with a range of individuals with different backgrounds and areas of expertise
  • Self-starter with significant initiative and ability to work independently
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in Nepali a plus; native English speaker or education in England or the U.S. highly preferred
