Technical reporting: Team Leader – NURP

Job Purpose:

Experienced Nepali senior project management expert with a firm GESI mainstreaming and promotion competency. The program will strengthen disaster risk management capacity and institutions in Nepal in a way that is inclusive, uses best practices and technological innovations, and is adaptive to changes in the situation with specific experiences of working with local government stakeholders. The role will be a senior team member of overall Nepal Urban Resilience Program (NURP) and VSO's team, and will technically report directly to the Team Leader (NURP) with a line management link to the Head of Program – Inclusive Governance, VSO Nepal. As all activities are designed to increase the inclusion and participation of marginalized groups in disaster risk reduction and risk management issues, a key task of the Deputy Team leader is to ensure that consortium activities include and promote participation and responsiveness to the needs and interests of marginalized groups and women through all parts of the programme cycle

Emphasis on delivering Results – Adds Value: Analyses objectives, considers options, plans and manages appropriately; holds self and team accountable for achieving goals. Providing mentoring and supporting to team members for delivering the project results

Essential criteria 

Technical: 

  • Sound technical expertise in gender and social inclusion. Knowledge on inclusion. Expertise in social accountability promotion in government programmes will be added advantage
  • Strong project management experience managing diverse team and working closely with diverse stakeholders including local government authorities
  • Ability to develop and deliver learning and development initiatives
  • Proven understanding of contemporary approaches in participatory development, and gender and social inclusion
  • Familiarity of key requirements for successful engagement of team members, social mobilizers, and technical and non-technical volunteers in development projects

Financial Management:

  • Financial management skills 
  • Excellent budget monitoring and management skills

Team Work:

  • Excellent team leadership including good mentoring and coaching to strengthen team performance
  • Excellent teamwork and relationship building skills
  • Experience working collaboratively as a member of a Management Team 
  • Comfort in a matrix management environment

Information Technology:

  • Good level of computer skills (Windows, Excel, Power Point, Word, Outlook, and Internet)

Communication Skills:

  • Excellent written and spoken English and Nepali language
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, able to influence and coach and ability to build partnerships and relationships in a multi-cultural environment
  • Experience working cross-culturally, and understanding of issues of diversity
  • Excellent presentation development and delivery skills

Work Management and Problem Solving:

  • Self-organised with ability to manage time and tight schedules, working effectively under pressure
  • Ability to work on own initiative, with a creative approach to problem-solving
  • Strong level of attention to detail

Volunteering for Development and Youth Engagement:

  • Understanding and valuing the role of volunteering for development
  • Valuing the role of young people in development
  • Experience of working with international and national professional volunteers and youth plus personal experience of volunteering for development is a significant advantage

Highly Desirable:

  • Knowledge of key concepts and practices in DRM/DRR
  • Experience of managing change in an international environment
  • Research knowledge and experience

Travel requirement:

  • Able to travel in country and internationally occasionally and spend time away from work- base location and home

Knowledge/Qualifications/ Experience: 

  • Master’s Degree or equivalent closely related field 
  • Minimum of 5 years of managerial experience working in issues related to DRM with focus on GESI in Nepal, at both national and local government levels
  • Experience in designing GESI frameworks into development projects and ensuring that gender is mainstreamed throughout the entire project cycle
  • Experience working with the Government of Nepal in designing related policy and strategy
  • Experience in working with local Governments in Nepal to deliver GESI-sensitive and inclusive planning and development activities
  • Experience working with local governments in designing related policy and strategy
  • Experience in integrating GESI dimensions into disaster risk management efforts
  • Experience working in donor projects (USAID, World Bank, DFID, ADB, JICA)
