Reporting to: Emergency Nutrition Advisor 
Reporting to Position: Infant and Young Child Feeding Emergency Supervisor

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Assess mothers and their children to identify specific feeding support needs.
  • Minimize the risk of artificial feeding in emergencies through proper assessment using approved criteria and reporting any violations of the Code. 
  • Develop capacity of local NGOs and staff to support breastfeeding in emergencies including artificial feeding if necessary.
  • Provide one on one breastfeeding counselling for mothers experiencing difficulties breastfeeding including supporting re-lactation where necessary
  • Conduct community surveys to identify target beneficiaries (children under 2 and pregnant and lactating women and wet-nurses) in collaboration with FCHVs
  • Provide skilled support to mothers of children 0-6 months who are currently mix feeding to return to exclusive breastfeeding
  • Provide training, demonstration, on-going guidance and support to provide artificial feeding safely for exceptional cases until the infant is at least 6 months old
  • Refer children for intensive nutritional/medical care as required (e.g. CMAM)
  • Identify mothers to become peer educators in the Health Mothers Group, and to support them to undertake sensitisation and referral to the Mother-Baby Areas (MBAs). 
  • Keep a register of mothers and children attending education sessions, receiving skilled assessment and support
  • Weekly reporting of activities to the Infant and Young Child Feeding supervisor 
  • Local level awareness raising on best feeding practices for infants and young children amongst other humanitarian actors in the locality

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE 

  • Nurse, Midwife or Auxiliary Midwife qualification
  • One year of relevant experience
  • Knowledge of best infant and young child feeding practices and a willingness to learn
  • Capacity to keep accurate records of activities and report in a timely manner
  • Ability to make a work plan and direct work independently
  • Willingness to live and work in difficult situations
  • First-hand experience in breastfeeding and/or lactation management

WORKING CONDITIONS 

The position holder is expected to be ready for the deployment in any of the affected district(s) at short notice. S/he will normally work unusual hours and are often working in stressful and insecure environments.

The selection process will begin immediately and the shortlisted candidates, when informed, may have to make themselves available for further assessment on a very short notice.
